Appenzeller Spitzhaubens

Silver Spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben
The Appenzeller Spitzhauben was developed in the Appenzell region of Switzerland and is the Swiss national bird. This breed is very rare in the United States. Spitzhaubens are unique birds both in appearance and personality. They are intelligent, super foragers, and fly well. They prefer to roost high, and will roost in trees if allowed. Head to toe, these birds have an interesting look with cavernous nostrils, a tight forward facing crest bent over their heads, V-style combs, beautiful spangles, and blue legs and feet..... features making them difficult to resist. Although sometimes described as "flighty", we find them to settle well if handled on a regular basis. They are personable and without a doubt comical. We've placed several birds with young 4-H kids who adore them and have no problem turning them into lap chickens.
For more information on the history of the Spitzhauben, check out this website...

We are founding members of  The Appenzeller Spitzhauben Club of America. The club was formed by members of a Facebook group dedicated to the Spitz. The club is working with the American Poultry Association to get this breed recognized in the US.
